Being a Program Assistant is one of the most demanding, but rewarding jobs at SHAD. Program Assistants live on campus and are responsible for the education, mentorship, and safety of many young people. This “round-the-clock” responsibility means that you are always on duty from the time the participants arrive on campus until they leave 27 days later. Program Assistants are responsible for guiding discussions, supporting recreational activities, and mentoring participants. The most important role of a Program Assistant is to support the development of a safe and inclusive community.
Programs such as SHAD thrive on diversity. As such, we are seeking applicants with diverse backgrounds and experience to build a strong team that will thrive in a challenging work environment. Ideal candidates are mature, responsible, and have completed at least their second year of university. Candidates have proven experience in leadership and community involvement. They are passionate about working with and supporting younger students. Familiarity with the programs and facilities of Western University will be considered a strong asset.

Successful applicants have the following characteristics and/or experience:

  • Ability to take direction and provide leadership accordingly
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience working with youth and a demonstrated ability to positively influence group members
  • Experience organizing and leading small and large groups
  • Enjoys a challenge and has incredible drive
  • Creativity
  • Ability to demonstrate professional and appropriate relationships with students and staff
  • Ability to work as part of a team

What are the expectations for the PA position?

  • Live in residence at Western University in London, Ontario for the duration of the program; room, board and salary is provided.
  • Hold a current Standard First Aid and CPR certificate (must be complete prior to start of employment)
  • Provide a  current Criminal Reference Background Check
  • Attend training prior to the start of the program
  • A final report will be required from all staff after the program ends that highlight areas of strength, need and next steps for the program.

  • Current Resume (maximum 2 pages) and cover letter (1 page)
  • Two professional references who we can contact to learn more about your work habits and capabilities. It is best to use people who have seen you in a professional environment (i.e. work or school) similar to the SHAD environment. If you have previously worked for SHAD before, please include your SHAD Program Director as one of your references.

We will be collecting applications until February 28th, 2018. Only applicants selected for an interview will be contacted; we anticipate conducting interviews in mid-March.
